There are lots of misconceptions about the word "Hoodoo". So let's look at what is Hoodoo first...

 

Hoodoo is a practice of African-American occultism that began in the African diaspora during the time of slavery in the United States. Many of the practises are similar to those of other African diaspora traditions because they come directly from the Bakongo people of Central Africa. Approximately 40% of Africans taken to the United States during the transatlantic slave trade were Bantu-Kongo.

 

Hoodoo is a syncretic spiritual system that combines Christianity, Islam, and Spiritualism brought over by enslaved West African Muslims. This tradition is part of the African-American spiritual and religious heritage. Hoodoo spread throughout the United States following the Great Migration of African-Americans.

 

Hoodoo was created by enslaved African Americans for their spiritual survival as a form of resistance against slavery after the arrival of diverse African ethnic groups to the United States. Because the African American community lacked the same medical and psychological resources as European Americans, its members were forced to rely on one another for survival. As a result, both free and enslaved African Americans relied on Hoodoo to protect them.

 

Hoodoo was created to give people access to supernatural forces in order to improve their lives. Hoodoo is said to help people gain power or success ("luck") in a variety of areas of their lives, including money, love, health, and employment. In Hoodoo, herbs, minerals, an individual's possessions, candles, coloured candles, incense, and other spiritual tools are used extensively, as in many other spiritual and medical folk practises, to bring healing, protection, love, and luck.
